Sacred Vessel

Sexual assault as a tactic of war is endemic in a number of conflict zones around the world, but most is most prominent in the civil war in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Rape, sexual torture and genital mutilation is a highly effective tactic being used to clear valuable territory around mines, particularly around sources of coltan, the material used in rechargeable batteries found in mobile phones and laptop computers. The beneficiaries of this war crime are primarily multinational technology companies, and the consumers of their products. Sacred Vessel is a collection of 48 raku vessels, fired in a homemade wood-fuelled kiln in the artist’s garden.

Showing from 23 July, 2019 at the Kaleidoscope Gallery in Sevenoaks, England.
